Kimura captures 3 belts at NAGA!

The Kimura group that competed at NAGA New England may have been small in number, but they came away with big honors. Kimura competitors won three championship belts at the NAGA New England Championship held at the Twin River Casino in Rhode Island on February 6. Carlos (brown/black), Cabeca (purple), and Diego (purple) all won their competitive divisions, each taking home a championship belt. Congrats! The tournament was also the first competition for some of the Kimura kids as trained by Paulista. Way to go! All of the kids fought well, including Clay and Ian Henrys, and Nate Chandler, a 6 year old, who took first place. Two of Kimura’s teenage students, Thiago and Lyle, fought for the first time as well and are to be congratulated.

Top Kimura Academy competitors, Tho Vu and Joey Bell, both medaled in the 2010 European Open Jiu-Jitsu Championships. As hosted by the International Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Federation, the championships were held January 28-31 at the Complexo Municipal Esportivo do Casal Vistoso in Lisbon, Portugal. Tho took home a silver medal, placing second in the master’s purple belt feather weight division. Joey placed third in the adult purple belt feather weight division. Way to go Joey and Tho! Kimura in Gladiator Magazine

Pick up the latest issue of Gladiator Magazine!

This is what Gladiator writer, Kirik Jenness, had to say about Kimura:

“Although BJJ, grappling, and MMA are individual sports, one of the defining aspects of the pursuits is a strong sense of team. There is no team in the USA with a more fervent sense of camaraderie, friendship, and unity than Kimura Academy.

After a long and distinguished career as a competitor and instructor, in 2001 Master Jean Kleber founded the first Kimura School outside of Brazil, in Portugal. In 2003 he came to America, and Kimura BJJ USA has born. Now headquartered in Watertown, Massachusetts, the 2,500 square foot academy offers over twenty adult, teen, and children classes weekly, morning, afternoon, and night, with private classes seven days per week.

When the dust settled on the mats and the chants of KIMURA! KIMURA! died down, the team had taken the NAGC Adult Gi title. Incredibly, although the schedule of the bus dictated that the team would be competing only in the afternoon gi division (rather than both gi and no gi) Kimura BJJ also took second overall for Adult teams. Then with exhortations over the PA system from NAGA President to party it up, they got back on the BJJ bus, and drove merrily home.”

Thank you to everyone at NAGA and Gladiator Magazine and to Kirik!

Kimura wins NAGA North American team title

The Kimura Academy put on a dominating performance at the NAGA North American Championships, winning the team gi title and taking home more than 20 individual medals. Some 1500 grappling and jiu-jitsu competitors took part in the tournament November 15-16 in Newark, New Jersey.

“Our team put on a strong performance, and we have many new promising students competing with each tournament,” said Kimura head instructor, Jean Kleber.

Kimura scored a whopping 1080 points in the gi division with the second place, Gold Team Fighters, following with 570. The school became the first from New England to win the North American championship.

Among the many Kimura medal winners, Marcos Silva finished in first place in the highly competitive purple super heavyweight division. Andrea Muccini also won gold in the women’s blue belt lightweight division.

Jimmy wins by submission

Early in November, Kimura fighter, Jimmy Collins, recorded his second MMA victory at a NAGA Reality Fighting event in Plymouth, Massachusetts. Collins (2-0) landed some early punches before hip-tossing his southpaw opponent, Anthony King, to the mat. After a little ground and pound, Jimmy took King’s back and sunk in the choke, winning by submission at just 1:08 into the first round. Congrats Jimmy!
