kimura adults Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in Boston, Watertown, Taunton, Tewksbury

We offer Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu classes for men and women of all levels and ability from novices with no previous experience to the most advanced practitioners of the art.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is widely considered to be one of the most efficient martial arts in the world for self defense because it was founded on the idea that a smaller, weaker individual can effectively defend against a stronger, more powerful or athletic opponent through the application of specific techniques using leverage.

Because BJJ is not a “striking” art, size, power, strength, or athleticism are not pre-requisites for success in learning and applying BJJ techniques.

Beyond offering arguably the most effective and efficient form of self-defense of all of the martial arts, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu can also be practiced as a sport through sanctioned competition. At Kimura BJJ, our training programs are designed to teach students the necessary skills that can be used for both self-defense and for sport. We believe in developing the best trained practitioners of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu regardless of their choice to focus their training on self-defense, organized competition or both.

Beginner Classes

Our beginner classes are designed to teach the fundamental techniques of BJJ that will serve as the foundation for all future learning and more advanced development.

Students at the beginner level will also begin to develop their own, personal BJJ style to best suit their individual preference and body types.

Quite often some of our more advanced students will attend our beginner classes to train with and help our newer students develop their skills. This gives our beginners multiple resources to tap into as they work to advance.

All Level Classes:Q

Our “All Level” classes are structured to hone and refine the skills students learn at the beginner level and further develop their technique to a level of mastery.

All Level classes are open to our students ranked Blue Belt or higher and offer an outstanding opportunity for both developing and advanced practitioners to benefit by training together. In our All Level classes, students who have developed their skills beyond the novice level (having achieved Blue Belt rank), have the opportunity to train directly with advanced students to help accelerate their own learning, while advanced students can use the opportunity to reinforce their application of foundation techniques.

Advanced students in our All Level classes also continue to develop and refine their personal BJJ style and add new positions and techniques to expand their own arsenal as they work toward mastery.

Some of our students enjoy challenging themselves by testing their skills in organized competition. For those students with an interest in competing there are opportunities in all Kimura classes to train and prepare for competition. Typically a minimum of 6 months of training is necessary before novices are ready for organized competition but Kimura instructors will be the best judge of a student’s readiness to compete.

We are extremely proud of our record of success in BJJ competition and Kimura students are widely recognized in the tournament world as being extremely well prepared and possessing a never quit attitude. No competition team better exemplifies team unity and team spirit than Team Kimura!

Women- BJJ Training and Empowering Women:

Women choose to train in martial arts for a variety reasons: fitness, stress reduction, a sense of empowerment, and competition to name just a few. However, learning self-defense is by far the most common reason women choose to train in martial arts.

Self-defense training for women presents unique challenges for female students as the effectiveness of most martial arts is based on the ability to effectively strike an opponent or would be attacker. This puts most women at a distinct disadvantage if they find themselves in a threatening situation because striking with any effectiveness requires a combination of timing, strength, speed, and power.
Most women, including those with martial arts training, could find that a stronger, more powerful and athletic opponent or would be attacker simply has the ability to overpower them.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is almost tailor made for women as a method of self-defense as it was developed from its origin to neutralize any advantage of power, size, or strength.

At Kimura BJJ, our female students train with our male students in exactly the same classes. This is only possible because as a grappling, leverage, and technique based art, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu keeps females and males on a perfectly level playing field when opposing each other- Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu offers women the ideal self-defense solution.

Anybody who has witnessed one of our classes at Kimura BJJ has likely seen our female students demonstrate the effectiveness of BJJ when they use fundamental BJJ techniques such as joint locks or choke holds to force their male training partners into submission. At Kimura BJJ, we witness the efficacy of BJJ training for women every day.

At Kimura BJJ we also find that having males and females train together in the same classes, offers our female students the advantage of gaining very real and practical experience in actually applying what they learn, in scenarios that replicate threats they might encounter by would be attackers in real life. Simply put there is no better self-defense training for women than Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, and of course fitness, stress reduction, a sense of empowerment, and competition are among many of the other benefits students of either gender can realize when training in BJJ.
